Match Fixing-Pakistan not the only Black Sheep
With Pakistan's Salman Butt, Mohammed Asif and Mohammad Aamir under the microscope, the match fixing scandal gets murkier everyday. But the other countries cannot point a finger at Pakistan as they themselves have been part of such rackets
Let us start with Manoj Prabhakar. He was the first who shook the foundations of cricket by alleging that Kapil Dev had offered him money to under-perform. The allegation was treated in a cursery manner and Kapli cleared , while Prabhakar was banned for 5 years. The fact that Kapil was involved or not does not matter , the important point is that crickets darkest secret had been bared.
From that day on Cricket was never the same again. The stink spread further and Mohammed Azuraddin the Indian cricket captain was banned for life. But memories are short and despite his name being tainted with the devils deed, yet the Congress party thought it fit to make him an MP. Was it a reward for being in league with bookies and fixing matches ? Then we have that venerable player Hansie Cronje , who owned up before 'God' and asked for forgiveness.
It is not that players only from the sub continent are involved.The Australian suthorities tried to cover up the scandal that shook the world when it was revealed that Shane Warne and Mark Waugh admitted to taking a bribe from bookie to give him 'pitch'and 'weather' report. What a silly thing, yet the Australian board let them off without even a rap on their knuckles.
What we have witnessed is just the tip of the iceberg. Cricket is big money and the temptations are great.It is not an encouraging thought that the present chairman of the ICC is himself mired in umpteen controversies from Lavasa to the biddings in the IPL. How can one point a finger at only Pakistan?
Years ago Prabhakar made his allegations. People fixed him for them,but now he can certainly turn around and say 'look I told You ' !
