How A Blue Tooth Device Works

Blue tooth devices will usually function at 2.4 GHZ
in the license free, globally accessible ISM radio
band.  The advantage to this band consists of worldwide
availability and compatibility.  A disadvantage to
this however, is that the gadgets should share this
band with different RF emitters.  This may include
car security systems, other wireless units,
and different noise sources, such as microwaves.

To beat this challenge, Bluetooth technology uses a
quick frequency hopping design and subsequently uses
smaller packets than other standards within the
ISM band.  This design will help to make bluetooth
communication extra robust and extra secure.

Frequency Hopping

Frequency hopping is principally leaping from frequency
to frequency within the ISM radio band.  After a
blue tooth system sends or receives a packet, it
and the machine (or units) it is communicating with
hop to a different frequency before the next packet is
sent.  This system offers three advantages:

1.  Permits bluetooth gadgets to use the
entirety of the accessible ISM band, while never
transmitting from a fixed frequency for more than a
quick interval of time.  This helps insure that
blue tooth conforms to the ISM restrictions on the
transmission amount per frequency.

2.  Makes sure that any interference won't
last long.  Any packet that does not arrive safely
to its destination may be resent to the next
frequency.

3.  Gives a base level of security as
it's extremely onerous for an eavesdropping system to predict
which frequency the blue tooth units will use
next.

The connected units nonetheless, should agree upon the
frequency they will use next.  The specification
in blue tooth ensures this in two ways.  First, it
defines a master and slave type relationship between
bluetooth devices.  Next, it specifies an algorithm
that makes use of system particular data when
calculating the frequency hop sequences.

A blue tooth device that operates in master mode can
communicate with as much as seven devices that are set in
slave mode.  To each of the slaves, the master
blue tooth device will send its own distinctive address
and the value of its personal inner clock.  The
data despatched is then used to calculate the
frequency hop sequences.  

Because the master system and every of the slave
devices use the same algorithm with the same preliminary
input, the related units will always arrive
together on the next frequency that they've agreed
upon.

As a replacement for cable technology, it is no
surprise that bluetooth devices are often battery
powered, such as wi-fi mice and battery powered
Cell Phones.  To preserve the power, most devices
function in low power.  This helps to provide bluetooth
devices a range of around 5 - 10 meters.

This range is far enough for wi-fi communication
however close enough to avoid drawing an excessive amount of power
from the power source of the device.
