The Xperia X10 Mini Casts A Mini Shadows The Giant X10

Product leaks on the Sony Ericsson Robyn finally gets confirmed at the recent Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona with the announced  Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini slated to reach markets by the 2nd quarter of year.

The much anticipated first Android Phone from the 4th largest Mobile Phone maker, the XPERIA X10 has been released last month and is now carried by the majors with a SIM free price of ₤480 and offered free with a 2-year Pay Monthly plan at ₤35.month.

The Mini hopes to capitalize on the market frenzy generated by the superb X10 with a minimized version that can extend its appeal to a larger market with a lower price point, a small footprint and a lightweight 88g which qualifies it to be among the lightest touchscreen smartphones on the planet.

Mini Features

Taken on its own, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini is a fairly capable Android handset. Looking at its data sheet, the Mini has little X10 pedigree other than its Android 1.6 OS with the UX user interface and the same preloaded Timescape and Mediascape apps.

If not for its name that makes loud pretenses to an X10 heritage on a smaller and lighter body, you would think it's just another Android handset with conventional features.  It should appeal to a budget crowd wanting the X10 aura on a more pocketable and affordable body.

It will also appeal to a younger crowd as it will come in six different colors - black, Pearl White, pink, red, silver and lime.

Under the hood, the Mini loses the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon of the powerful X10 and settles for a less muscled 500 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor which is just fine for its lackluster set of features.

• With a smaller body comes a smaller 2.6-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with QVGA resolution, down from the magnificent 4-inch Wide VGA resolution of the X10.  At least it has a more brilliant 16 million color depth.  It gets a gravity accelerometer for auto rotate portrait or landscape viewing and an anti-scratch glass cover.
• Imaging is another minimized casualty. It now gets a conventional 5 megapixel autofocus camera, down form the 8 megapixel shooter in the X10. You lose the image stabilization and face/smile detection features but you still get autofocus, LED Flash and geo tagging from its GPS. Video recording resolution from WVGA also gets lopped off to VGA resolution on the same 30fps frame rate with video light.
• On board memory gets a paltry 128 MB from the generous 1 GB in the X10 but you still get microSD expandability of up to 16 GB. Talk times are likewise minimized from the 10 hours on the X10 down to 4 hours on the same 2G /Gsm Network when fully charged

Typical Phone Features on Android

Other than these, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini is a 3G phone on the dual band UMTS for Asian and European markets and a Tri Band on the North American markets with HSDAP/HSUPA data speeds for a fast internet browsing experience.

It's also a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio on the 2G network.  There's WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for all its local data connectivity options.  You also get SatNav functionality with a built-in GPS receiver with Google Maps.
