Bodie - One Of The Truest Soldiers In The Wire

Character's Role: Bodie (legally Preston Broadus) is a dealer in The Wire who starts out in Avon Barksdale's organization. Bodie was the number two man in the Pit under D Barksdale and later went out on his own. Bodie was brought up by his grandmother and first entered the game as a young hopper at 13 years old when he began dealing with Barksdale's people. He lives his life strictly by the code of a dealer in the drug game and in that he has a sense of honor. He follows commands from the top (even the tough ones that have implications for his friends), he does not snitch, and he works hard trying little by little to climb up the ranks. He's intelligent - managing to claim entrapment to avoid time in jail at the close of season 1, and he has a whole lot of pride and heart - deciding not to leave his territory even when Chris and Snoop (the hardest killers in the game) are on top of him. Just as McNulty tells him, he is a "true soldier."

Best Scene: In the first season, Wallace and Bodie are playing checkers using the pieces from a chess set and D teaches them how to actually use the pieces to play chess. He portrays the different pieces of the set as players in the game, and Bodie, appearing to understand how the game works, says to D'Angelo, "A'ight, so if I make it to the other end, I win.", referencing the potential for each pawn to become a powerful queen (or for Bodie to become Stringer). It is clear that Bodie is very driven, but regrettably for him, the drug game is more similar to how D'Angelo describes it, "the pawns, man, in the game, they get capped quick."

My Favorite Quote: "I feel old. I been out there since I was 13. I ain't never bleeped up a count, never stole off a package, never did some s*** that I wasn't told to do. But what come back?... This game is rigged man ... be like them little bleeps on the chess board." This is Bodie. He is a soldier, faithful to his organization, and prepared to do what it takes; but unfortunately, it is as D says - the soldiers don't get very far in the game.

Best Foil or Rival: Bodie's friend and young hopper Wallace. Bodie's colder personality, his older spirit (and you could even call it his maturity), and his ready to do what is required mindset are countered by the youth of Wallace, his baby face, his moral dilemmas with drug dealing, and his lack of dedication to the game.
