Need a Watch for the Workplace? Try These Understated Classic Designs from Stuhrling Original
Stuhrling Original is a relatively young company that is committed to carrying on the Swiss tradition of watch making in a new century. Founded by Max Stuhrling IV in 1999, his goal was to honor the three generations of watchmakers who gave him his name. At present, his company is one of the fastest growing makers of fine timepieces in the world. In this article we will take a look at three of their most popular models.
The Alpine
Along with the Dolanhi, the men's Alpine automatic watch is one of the top selling models in company history. If you have never worn one before, an automatic watch is self-winding. The mainspring is powered by the motion of the wearer's arm, which means that it need never be wound. As you might expect, automatic watches are mechanical and do not rely on cheap electronic Quartz technology. In the modern times, only companies that employ skilled horologists make automatic watches. And Stuhrling original is just such a company. But let's get back to the watch.
Like most automatic watches, the Alpine has a power reserve, so just in case you fall asleep for a day and a half and stop moving, your timepiece will keep on ticking. The watch case is stainless steel and the bezel is polished chakra style. For watch lovers who prefer large timepieces, the Alpine has a 52-milimeter round case. The dial is skeleton style, which means that you can see the gears of the watch between the propeller style faceplate. Protected by a mineral sapphire watch cover or crystal, the watch is water resistant up to 165 feet or 50 meters. The embossed Arabic numbers at the four, eight, and twelve hour indices put a final finishing touch on a stunning timepiece.
The Dolanhi
As we mentioned earlier, the Stuhrling Dolanhi men's watch is one of the company's best-selling timepieces. And with one look at its classic features and elegant design, it's not hard to see why. The Dolanhi is an automatic timepiece just like the Alpine. It is powered by 20 jewels, which are used as weights to keep the gears going. As any master watchmaker will tell you, between 17-23 jewels is best in automatic watches. Horologists at Stuhrling choose the number in the middle just to be sure. The timepiece itself features a stainless-steel case with 18K gold plating.
Like the Alpine, the Dolanhi has a skeleton style dial that is available in black or gold. All of the hour indices are marked with Arabic numerals in either black or gold. The watch cover is made of tough, scratch-resistant crystal that protects the Dolanhi in up to 165 feet (50 meters) of water. As if that weren't enough, the watch also features a top of the line black lizard embossed strap with a gold-plated, stainless-steel clasp.
The World Traveler
One of the newest models from Stuhrling Original is the men's Lifestyle World Traveler watch. Many of the world's top watchmakers have taken a stab at creating a world timer, which is a watch that keeps track of the time in all 24 of the world's time zones. This was impossible, of course, before Quartz technology was perfected in the early 1970's. And while most Struhrling watches are mechanical, their talented horologists simply couldn't resist the challenge.
The World Traveler watch is their response. Perfect for the businessman on the go or for anyone who has friends or family overseas, this unique timepiece can tell you the exact time in all twenty-four time zones. But that's not all. With most so-called world-timers the user has to set a rotating ring on the world city of his choice to get tell the time. But the World Traveler watch does not require adjustment. The twenty-four time zone dial simply moves with the minute hand. So, all you have to do is read the center dial to tell the time in any city on earth. A few of the most popular cities on the dial include: New York, Chicago, Paris, London, Moscow, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
In addition to its primary function as a world timer, the World Traveler is also a well-made watch.
In fact, the watch is worth the asking price just for the artfully designed guilloche soleil dial. The process that is used to create these dials is called hydraulic embossing, which is an old-world technique that is only used in high-end timepieces. The watch case is made of stainless steel and the cover is scratch-resistant mineral crystal. There is even a date window alongside the Arabic numerals that mark the hour indices. An elegant alligator embossed strap is thrown in for good measure. How they managed to pack so many features into a single timepiece is beyond us, but somehow Stuhrling Original has done it.
