Time to learn how to install a programmable thermostat

I cursed the day i was forced to install my programmable thermostat because im not the best with wires lol. Call me a wimp if you wanna, most times when it comes to house hold repairs (including electrical work) im grabbing the yellow pages.

Can i be honest with you? Good, after reading alot of articles on installing thermostats an ideal pops inside my "i ought to install my own thermostat". After going through Google, i decide to purchase a Honeywell rth221b basic programmable thermostat. Now its the time of truth, time to install my thermostat.

Before i go any futhure, please keep in mind this article will teach you how to install a thermostat, but should not substitute your manufacturer instructions. Firstly turn off all power at your main service panel. What i found works best is turning off all power. 

Some people say you should just turn power off to whatever room your working in, but to be on the safe side i rather turn off all power. Remove the cover and control panel from your old thermostat. For most models, the cover and control board snaps off. 

Try searching for a recessed lip around the side or maybe the bottom which will allow you to remove the faceplate and control board. Please make sure you remember where you place the faceplate and control board just in case the installation is a no-go.

Please lable your wires according to their present positioning and remove 1 by 1. As you may know, newer programmable thermostats come with sticker tabs which wrap around wires coming out your wall. Dont get worried if your box doesnt contain any printed labels. You can use electrical tape and a sharpie. 

Time to remove your old thermostat plate from your wall. Whatever you do, do not allow your wires to fall back inside the wall as your unscrewing the old plate. Some people say you should tape a group of wires to your wall (not me). Frequently the wires will be stiff, so try spreading them out (works best for me). 

Its a sure fire way to make sure the wires do not fall back in your wall. Time to connect your new thermostat plate to your wall buddy. What i have found out is most new model plates do not match up with the holes from your old thermostat, but there is good news.

What i did was drilled a few openings for my new thermostat and placed the drywall anchors which the package comes with. Time to insert your batteries. My Thermostat takes 2 AA batteries, which holds all memory settings just incase the electricity goes out. Time to reattach the wires according to their label and placement on your new thermostat.

Boy let me tell you this was the tough part because i didnt have much room to work with. My system has several wires (10 to be exact), so you already know i went through h@%$ and back lol. After FINALLY attaching all wires i was almost at the finish line. 

Time to attach your interface and face plate to your BRAND NEW thermostat. Just match the pins on your control panel with the pins on the back plate which will be attached to your wall. Time to turn on the power lol. Turn your power on and program your thermostat as your instructions advise.

Let me tell you, my electric bill is now 18% cheaper per month thanks my Honeywell rth221b basic programmable thermostat up-grade. Hopefully i have been of help to you my friend. Goodluck and enjoy your day.
