Common Types Of Touch Screens
Touch Screen technology nowadays comes in three main forms: resistive, capacitive and surface acoustic wave.
Resistive touch screens use a normal glass panel which is covered with a resistive and a conductive metallic layer. They also have a protective / scratch resistant layer on top. On touching the screen, the two metallic layers connect and the change in electrical field is recorded. A circuit then calculates the coordinates of where your finger touched the screen and transfers them to the software being used. The touch screen software then transfers the information to your operating system which will then visually (mouse drag / click) show you the action on the screen. With this type of touch screen, you can use your finger, a pen or any other such item to control what you what to do.
An alternative to resistive touch screen technology is a capacitive touch screen. Capacitive touch screens work on the basis of transferring electronic charge from the device to the input method and so a conductive input method must be used. A capacitive screen is made up of a glass monitor screen layered by a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide on which sensors are placed in the corners. Once the user presses the screen, an electrical charge is passed from the screen to the user and the change in electrical energy is recorded by the sensors. The data is then passed on from the sensors to the software to the operating system on the device and converted into a visual display or function.
One of the most recent developments in touch screen technology is surface acoustic wave technology. Although this technology was first identified over one hundred years ago, its use in touch screen technology is only just now being utilized. The concept is that a controller monitors and records changes in electrical charges, similar to the capacitive touch screen technology. The difference is that with this method, ultrasonic waves are emitted and received via two transducers and a reflector. As there are no extra layers involved, the screen is 100% clear.
Although the three types of touch screen technology listed above are the most common, there are many more types in use and even more in development. If you are unsure as to what kind of touch screen technology you require, there is a huge wealth of information available on the internet and you can even ask for advice from manufacturers if it is necessary.
