HOW GREEN IS ARTIFICIAL GREEN?
If you’re planning on installing turf to your home, commercial property, or sports fields, you’ve got a number of things to think about and a ton of questions you want answered. These days, however, it’s not surprising that many people spend a lot of time worrying about the environmental impact of what they do with their properties. After all, we’re app rather conscious of this footprint idea. We all leave a mark on the world and most of us want to make sure that we don’t do anything to make our impact a negative one for generations to come.
But what about artificial grass? Is it really a good idea? Is it really an environmentally friendly choice? How can something that’s artificial actually be good for the environment and better, in most instances, than the natural choice?
These are good questions, certainly, and it’s our job here at National Greens to make sure our customers are properly educated about their options when it comes to artificial turfs for residential and commercial properties.
Without further ado, then, let’s consider the first question. Is artificial grass a good thing for the environment and the environmentally friendly option? The short answer to that is yes, it most definitely is a good thing and it is the best option for the environment. The long answer, the ‘why this is’ answer, we can tell you that it requires less water and less repair and maintenance than regular grass.
Artificial turfs are also more durable in the sense that they last much longer than natural grass. They don’t need to be mowed, they don’t get muddy, and they are available for play all year around, at any time. They don’t flood or freeze, either, which means there is no need to develop methods to manage excess water or frozen ground, which can use up natural resources or mean we end up putting more toxins into the environment.
Artificial turf doesn’t absorb toxins either, as natural grass does through the soil, and artificial turf can be a great way to recycle elements like rubber. There’s no need to apply pesticides, and it’s an all-round cost saver.
A growing number of high schools and colleges across America are opting for artificial turf for their athletic fields. Golf courses, commercial properties, and even a few residential properties are opting for artificial turf as well.
Offering a more consistent surface than regular, natural grass, artificial turf is not only environmentally friendlier than the real thing, it is also a lot safer for everyone, particularly athletes and children. Artificial turf is actually a great addition to any school yard, park, or playground. It’s even the preferred surface for KinderCare businesses around the country, since it offers protection against hard falls and nasty knocks, especially with young children (toddlers) and those who are particularly energetic!
Sports enthusiasts can benefit from access to artificial grass because it also provides the means of practicing on a regular basis without having to worry about the weather. And what better way to enjoy the outdoors than on artificial turf that’s comfortable, safe, and requires virtually no maintenance. The outdoors is literally opening up with artificial turf options and communities and families are able to take advantage of fresh air once again, without having to worry about mowing the lawn.
For sports establishments, it’s crucial to consider that even well-conditioned natural grass can only take 50 events a year according to most research efforts. Artificial turf is a superior playing field to traditional grass as well, since, according to most users, the level surface lets everything from balls to athletes to move better and faster.
The only potential downside to artificial turf is that it may need to be replaced every twelve to fifteen years in the case of most heavily used sports turfs – but this is only in the case of heavy usage. The vast majority of turfs installed in residential and commercial properties don’t need to be replaced at all and serve instead as a great way to recycle otherwise unusable and non-degradable materials.
