How to Solve PST Hotsync Issues?

HotSync is defined as the method of linking a computer system and a Palm handheld device to allow a sophisticated synchronization between the two systems. You require a HotSync cable or a wireless connection that could setup a communication between these devices. When you setup Outlook to hotsync with your Palm device, all PST contents, which include emails, tasks, appointments etc., can be synchronized. Since the operation affects the PST data directly, odds are that the synchronization process may fail if the file is corrupt. You can repair a corrupted PST using Outlook Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe). But if this doesn't work, such situations create unavoidable situations of using a backup. If this fails too, you should use a PST Repair application.

To understand such problems, consider a practical instance when you try to synchronize Outlook data with your handheld device. You choose Outlook as the translator and click to synchronize an Outlook item, for example notes, contacts etc. The operation may fail with the below error on the screen:

“The file or database name associated with MS Outlook is missing, invalid, or points to a file of zero length. Use the browse button to locate the file or database”

The error occurs even when Outlook data file is correctly configured.

Cause

The above error suggests that the application cannot locate the file correctly to synchronie data with. The two possible reasons for such behavior are:

(1) Your MAPI profile is corrupted.

(2) If your Outlook is not configured to use Exchange Server, the reason could be that you are trying to synchronize with a PST that is corrupt.

Solution

To solve the discussed issue, you should apply these methods:

(1) You should delete and recreate the corrupted MAPI profile.

(2) For retrieving data from corrupted PST, you should first run Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe). The file can be located using Windows Search option while ensuring that the view of hidden files and folders is enabled. If Scanpst fails to repair, consider the latest backup to restore.
