HP Laptop not charging all the way?

I have an HP laptop that is about a year old, and when I plug in the adapter it says "charging", but the battery is not actually filling up past 84%, but it's not losing any charge either, so the adapter has to be working right? It wasn't doing this yesterday, but then I did download the newest windows 7 service pack ... could this have something to do with it, maybe some new feature that I didn't read about? Either way, it is annoying and I like my battery to be powered to full in case I need to take it somewhere with me, any ideas what could be going on? Okay ... know it says my battery is full, is this just a bug, or what?

if you abused the battery it might not be able to hold that much charge anymore. batteries naturally loose their ability to hold charge as they age but your case is not the norm. perhaps you need to recalibrate the battery. run it basically dry, turn off any safeties that suspend your computer at 10%battery and to make the process faster use your laptop, play a game or something when it dies, charge it, but don't use it just let it charge all the way up.
