The invention of spy glasses
Spy glass is another term for a hand-held telescope，which is used to magnify images from far away. It is a helpful tool for the amateur observation. Being different from the large astronomical observation, spy glasses are easy to carry with and are very convenient for immediate use.
Spy glasses can be divided into various kinds according to the different principles, such as the refracting telescope, reflecting telescope and so on. Though most of the spy glasses today are based on the reflecting principle, the origin spy glasses are grounded on the refracting.
The origin of the spy glasses will be introduced in the following. The invention of the refracting spy glasses goes to the year 1608, when a Dutch optician accidently discovered an interesting phenomenon. When he puts a concave lens in front of a convex one, the object from far distant is magnified for eyes to see easily. This is the first recorded spy glass, which is credited to the spectacle makers Hans Lippershey and Zacharias Janssenin Middelburg, and the instrument-maker and optician Jacob Metius of Alkmaar.
Galileo, who is a famous Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, immediately seizes the potential of the novel toy and at the same time makes an improvement to promote the first real spy glass in the following year. Galileo's spy glass is a tube nearly four feet long, with a lens mounted at each end. He finds a series of important discoveries using the spy glasses named after him.
His spy glass shows that the moon is covered with ordinary-looking mountains, valleys, and landscapes like those of the mundane world around us, but not a perfect, crystalline sphere of divine substance free of the rough imperfections of Earth. His spy glass shows that the shape of Venus changes with the time going, from the full to the crescent. This is a best evidence for the support Copernicus's heliocentric theory. So his spy glasses play a key role in scientific invention history.
Image that all the discoveries described above are found based on the little spy glasses which are cheap toys in today's world, we should be surprise at the wisdom of the respected scientist Galileo.
