Identify a Silver U.S. Coin
Almost half a century ago, the US Mint produced a special kind of coin. They were made of silver. Of course, during those times, those coins were simply seen as ordinary. In fact, they have been regularly circulated. However, in the 1960's, the price suddenly skyrocketed. Instead of using the silver coins as currency, citizens melted them down. Because of their silver content, they are valued at more than their pre-supposed denomination. Eventually, the US Mint decided to take the silver coins out of regular circulation. It also ceased on using silver to produce the succeeding batches of coin.

Look out for the exact year when your coin was made. Bear in mind that the US mint stopped producing and releasing coins in 1964. So, obviously, your coin should have been made during that year or earlier.
If the date in your coin has been worn off, inspect its rim. That should give you a confirmation on the authenticity of your silver coin. If the rim is silver, that's great news, what you have is a genuine piece. If the rim is brown, that's sad news, your coin is not made of silver.
Check out the denomination of your silver coin. If you have a dime, a quarter, a half dollar, or a dollar, chances are, your coin is authentic. Only those coin denominations were produced and released until 1964.

Do you have a nickel? Flip and inspect it back. If you have a Jefferson nickel, you should easily see the US Mint mark. It is a "P", a "D", or an "S". You should spot it on top of the Jefferson Memorial. The presence of the US Mint mark in that specific spot vouches for the authenticity of your silver coin. It was a silver nickel that circulated during the World War II period.
Do you have a half dollar? Check out the date. If it was made between 1965 and 1969, what you have has silver content. However, it only has 40 per cent.
Refer to some reliable references. A number of on-line resources are dedicated in giving you the edge in knowing authentic US Mint-released silver coins. They are meant to aid collectors or enthusiasts like you. In fact, some of them contain illustrations, photos, or "replicas" of the authentic silver coins. There are also specific guidelines describing the details and markers that single out the authentic ones.
If you have currently in possession of US Mint-produced silver coins and you are interested in trading them, make an effort to consult a professional. You need to hear practical advice on how you can have a fair deal. There are a lot of cheats out there. You may end up losing in the transaction. So, be more cautious. Educate yourself to avoid scouting trouble.
