Kyocera Mita KM-1510 – Desktop Digital Copy Machine

The Kyocera Mita KM-1510 is one of the lightest duty desktop copy machines available on the market today. Whereas most two in one units emphasize printing functions first and marginalize copy abilities, the KM-1510 brings emphasis on copying to the forefront of the hardware with exceptionally fast first copy out times and a copy specific memory expansion option.

With fairly standard paper handling abilities, the Kyocera Mita KM-1510 comes with a typical 250 sheet paper tray along with a 50 sheet multipurpose tray that can be very helpful when needing to bypass the standard paper supply for special media types. With the multipurpose tray, custom paper sizes and envelopes can be loaded automatically and programmed via dedicated controls that eliminate the need for a PC connection. Transparencies, letterhead, and card stock can also be copied from, and onto, via the MPT.

Copy resolution is, unfortunately, not Very Good, and runs at 600 x 600 dots per inch. It does operate at a very reasonable 256 levels of tone and offers a fast 1200 dot per inch print option. Copy memory is very disappointing with absolutely zero included, but a memory slot is left available that can fit a 16 MB MB-6 copy memory board for the inclusion of at least some RAM. The other expandability options available are an additional 250 sheet paper drawer and a stand.

With an additional drawer, users will experience a longer paper replacement cycle, but can also activate the Kyocera Mita KM-1510's automatic switching function between two, or even three, designated types of paper, presumably letter and legal, along with the possibility of a third, special media type. The optional stand is just what it sounds like.

Magnification levels can be set without the use of a PC and include full size, 2 reduction presets, and 2 enlargement presets. Zooming from 50% all the way up to 200% is made possible via digital copy technology and can be hand selected in 1% increments. The dimensions of the Kyocera Mita KM-1510 are surprisingly large and stand at 19.5 in. x 19.6 in. x 14.8 in. (W x D x H). Its weight is also unexpectedly huge at a whopping 55 lbs. Units with similar features can run as much as 20 full pounds lighter.

The Kyocera Mita KM-1510's maximum monthly duty cycle also leaves something to be desired, with only a 15,000 page per month allowance, and a much lower recommended average usage, meaning the copy machine is intended strictly for low volume, small office or home use only. With the Memory Card upgrade, the copier can produce up to 18 pages per minute legal size and 15 pages per minute letter size, but as it comes in box it can only execute speeds of 15 pages per minute letter and 13 pages per minute legal. While the Kyocera Mita KM-1510, and units similar to it, do have their particular market niche, most light duty users will be happier with a simple multifunctional inkjet or laser printer.
