Limited Usage: the Samsung Genio QWERTY
When Samsung first announced the Genio series, our interests got piqued thanks to the promise of innovative mobile phones for the next generation. Its here and honestly, we are not impressed.
The Genio series is composed of three devices, the Touch, Pro and QWERTY. Each device specializes in its own functionality and the QWERTY is the device for instant messaging. In an attempt to market the Genio line to a younger market, these Samsung phones are smaller, more artistically designed and has a brighter lighter feel than other mobile phones.
Sadly, despite all the potential of the Genio line, the Samsung Genio QWERTY fails at actually being a decent Mobile Phone. Our biggest complaint is the keyboard. It is hard to use and the buttons are made in such a way that they are too close to each other. While space on the face of a phone is limited, Samsung could have adjusted the button faces to be easily click-able even with larger fingers.
Had the buttons been slightly more elevated, this problem could have been avoided. Indeed, this mobile phone is a perfect example of how bad ergonomics can ruin a perfectly decent device.
Genio Spec Sheet
The Genio's specs are to be expected of a 2G GSM device. While the addition of EDGE compatibility is convenient, the lack of more web integrated elements makes you want to have more on this device. As it is, Genio QWERTY only supports Twitter and Facebook, you have to hope that more applications will be made for other websites such as Flickr and MySpace.
There will be a total of 75 pre-installed and download-able applications for the Genio QWERTY. Typing on the 2.2 Inch Screen is more than sufficient for reading messages, but those looking for a better display will have to look elsewhere.
The 2 mega pixel camera is a very sound choice for this device. The resolution is just enough for photographs without being too much for the average user. Hardware wise, our biggest complaint is with the 40MB internal memory, this phone could have done a bit better had they put in 512MB or more.
Look Elsewhere
If you have been looking forward to this device since it was first announced (it was announced as the Corby series outside of the UK, and it still carries that name in the US and in some parts of Asia), prepare to be utterly disappointed. Particularly if you have seen how well made other messaging mobile phones are.
Devices such as the Palm Pixi and the BlackBerry Bold put the QWERTY to shame with their excellent keyboards and integrated features. It's true that the Genio is not a full 3G device like the other phones, but maybe Samsung should just have gone and made the Genio QWERTY a true 3G phone instead.
Design Over Function
At least we can say that the Samsung Genio QWERTY looks good. The keyboard and screen are a little crammed at the front, but that still does not take away how interesting the phone design is. It is rather small and looks like it's a whole lot of fun to use. In targeting the younger market, Samsung has truly made a mobile device that looks and feels fresh.
