Is access to the Sprint network required to download on a Kindle?

I live in an area where Sprint is unavailable, but I would like to own this or a similar technology.

No, Sprint network access is not necessary to download books. You can do all the purchases and downloaded on your PC computer, then copy them to the Kindle through USB cable.
