Dos and Don'ts When Caring For Sensitive Skin

Everybody has skin - but not all skin is equal. Some people's skin tends to be more intolerant to things like contact with foreign materials, environmental conditions and any other situation where airborne irritants can have a negative effect on the skin. Unfortunately, some skincare products fall into the category of foreign materials, along with detergents and other common products which are chemical-based.

Additionally, there are different degrees of sensitive skin. For some people, any contact with these skin-irritating products can cause negative reactions. For others, it takes greater degrees of contact with irritants to become a problem. While there are a number os skincare products that are labeled as "sensitive skin products", they also come in different degrees of sensitivity.

If your experience, or doctor's diagnosis, has indicated that you have sensitive skin, you need to do your best to avoid materials, and skincare products, that will cause you irritation. To best take care of sensitive skin, here are several things to do, as well as several things not to do:

Things to Do:

* Only use products that are marked for sensitive skincare. Note, also, if the product labeling indicates any specific warnings about its use.

* Avoid excessive exposure to the sun, and minimize its effect by using an appropriate sunscreen.

* Select your skincare products based on minimum content of potentially harmful chemical ingredients.

* If you absolutely need to use products containing chemicals (e. g., doing laundry), protect your hands with appropriate gloves. Rubber gloves are the best, but wear a cotton glove beneath the rubber one if you are sensitive to rubber.

* Make sure that your soap and any other cleansers that you use are free from alcohol.

* When you return from spending time outdoors, be sure to remove any sunscreen or other outdoor-protective products.

Things Not To Do:

* If you are sensitive to outdoor pollutants like dust, you need to cover yourself sufficiently before going out.

* Most toners are alcohol-based, and should not be used if you have sensitive skin.

* Take care when scrubbing or exfoliating. If done too harshly, it can irritate the skin even to the point of inflammation.

* Makeup, if left on for too long, can be irritating. When removing makeup, you should only use products that are labeled as hypoallergenic.

If you have sensitive skin, you need to be especially careful when buying and using skincare products, as well as in doing normal, everyday activities. Whether you are indoors or out, you need to be aware of potential dangers to your skin, and take appropriate measures to minimize the effects of irritants.
