Automatic Transmissions

In an automatic transmission, gears are changed automatically, according to the engine RPM, vehicle speed, load and other other factors. Most automatics have 4 forward gears or speeds, older automatics generally had 3 speeds, many times the 4th gear is called the overdrive or OD.  A typical planetary gear consist of three main parts, Outer ring gear, an Inner gear, called the Sun gear, and planetary carrier with three or four small gears that are placed between the inner sun gear and the outer ring gear. At anytime, one of the parts of the planetary gear can be connected to the input shaft leading to the engine, a second part can be held stationary and the third part is connected to the output shaft. Depending on which part is stationary which part is input and which part is output, different gear ratios will result. Hydraulic clutch packs, brake bands, and one-way clutches are used to control power flow through the planetary gear. Each gear corresponds to a certain combination of clutch packs and brake bands being engaged and disengaged. Almost all components inside an automatic transmission are operated by hydraulic pressure. For this purpose ATF (automatic transmission fluid) was specifically designed, it transfers hydraulic pressure, lubricates,absorbs heat from the friction, and through the use of a cooler, dissipates the heat and cools the transmission. An oil pump in the transmission supplies pressure to operate and lubricate all internal components. Because the pump only operates when the engine is running, towing vehicles with automatic transmissions may require making sure the drive wheels be lifted off the ground to avoid damaging the transmission. Refer to your owner's manual or dealer for towing recommendations. Many newer transmission are electronically controlled by micro-computers which can be part of the powertrain control module or PCM. Some transmissions have a separate unit called the TCM or transmission control module. Instead of using vacuum modulators or throttle pressure cables to regulate shift timing they use sensors and electronic shift solenoids. Power is transmitted to the automatic transmission through the use of  torque converter. This operates like the clutch on a manual transmission,but instead of mechanical friction operates on hydraulic friction. The torque convertor is bolted to the flex plate which in turn is bolted directly to the crankshaft, The torque convertor slides into the transmission by means of splines, the torque convertor engages the transmissions pump, which supplies hydralic pressure to operate internal parts of transmission.

Given proper maintenance and care, the automatic transmission will provide many miles of trouble-free operation. most minor problems can be traced to fluid level and condition. maintaining the proper fluid level and recomended service intervals will avoid these problems. keeping alert to changes in the operation of your transmission ( different shifting patterns, abnormal sounds, fluid leakage) can prevent small problems from becoming  large ones. most transmission failures are due to undetected leaks or extended fluid change intervals leading to plugged coolers and excessive particulates, circulating and causing accelerated wear and excessive heat. Here at Aurora clutch and more we will be happy to do a free roadtest and visual inspection for leaks, and fluid condition at no charge.
