ThinkPad R Series IBM
The design of the R52 could not be more accurate than the ThinkPad R Series IBM. Emblematic, this appearance is characterized primarily by the fact that it lies against the current of all standard and all modes of design, and to which no other manufacturer can escape. Here, no classy black lacquered finish, the flashy blue LEDs, clear plastic imitation of the metallic or of any curves or fantasies in the shape and thickness. No, the R52 is a brick black on black contrast which nothing (open as closed), except a few screws on the bottom and recessed connectors around the edges. With of course the perennial tricolor IBM logo in the lower right corner.
Far from being ashamed, the extreme austerity and simplicity that is what makes the strength of the R52, which immediately understand that this laptop does not have much to do with the channel, but with the professional world, one where the only recreation allowed between the opening of the financial report in Excel and edit PowerPoint presentations is a part of Minesweeper. From this initial feeling, is due any communication about IBM laptops such as ThinkPad R60, ThinkPad T60 and ThinkPad X60, the orientation of R & D sector (including the APS technology to protect the hard disk) but also all the equipment of R52 as we shall see.
In practice, this impression of solidity is far from being misleading. The ABS 2 mm thick used on the R52 is very stiff, and even if it is possible to feel a slight bending of the hull at a pressure on the back of the screen, the wrist does not move not. Importantly, this slightly rough plastic fears almost no scratches, unlike most of today's notebook. The result has been reluctant to release it under some circumstances and can afford to be less careful in its transport in any bag or by hand. Side pointing devices, IBM dual course the classic two-button touchpad with a Trackpoint, this mini-stick red ultra-sensitive stuck between the keys G, H and B. Moreover, note that on some models R50e entry level, the saving of this side door on the eviction of the touchpad and not the trackpoint! It must be said that once the adjustment period (slightly confusing) increased the accuracy of the latter proved formidable, easy to use as an editor at the pixel image. This is less true in games where nothing will replace the mouse. It should be noted that IBM is now one of the last to use it.
The TrackPoint is completed with three buttons: two clicks replace the left and right mouse, while the pressure of the middle one can manage the vertical and horizontal scrolling, and its acceleration through the use of both the Trackpoint. If the spacing between these three buttons and Trackpoint is ideal when using the thumb and index finger, however we regret the edges a little fine touches, a bit painful in the long run (especially on the button middle). In addition, sometimes when using the Trackpoint, the fingers naturally rest on the surface of the touchpad, causing jumps of pointers: a key to disable the latter has not been too much. Note that two red caps parts, and more or less smooth, are provided in the bundle. Even the IBM keyboard is unmistakable, with the historical lack of Windows keys. IBM is in fact the inventor of 84 and 102-key keyboards, which have been extended to 105 keys that following the arrival of Windows 95, except that IBM believes that adding a keyboard make the Windows key less ambidextrous.
