GPS and cellular monitoring of your children – make an informed decision before you violate their privacy
The world moves faster than ever today, and gives parents more concerns, however, more technology and tools exist now that help parents monitor and track their children. This article addresses a current trend – that of cell Phone Gps and general GPS monitoring of children by their parents. Many methods exist today that enable parents to monitor their children. These methods range from cell phone GPS services (such as Verizon's Work Force Manager), to the GPS tracking abilities of modern cars, to "stealth" applications that will run on your child's phone number. These services range from slightly intrusive (which just gives you the location of the cell phone), to having the ability to monitor, record and listen to every one of your child's voicemails, receive text messages, and eavesdrop on every single call your child makes.
The paramount issue with these monitoring methods is that, at the core, they infringe on your child's privacy. In fact, if you were to monitor someone else, or install a "stealth" application on someone else's phone or invade their privacy with these methods, you would conflict with many federal and probably state laws for an illegal invasion of privacy. Because you own the phone, and the child is yours, these monitoring methods are generally legal. However, before purchasing, installing or using this type of monitoring software or service, you should consult the terms and conditions of the software or service, and if you are still concerned, you should consult with a licensed attorney to make sure you do not engage in illegal activity.
These monitoring methods are ideal for parents of troubled children, helping parents of children that need extra "help" to become the type of person that all parents hope their children will become. These systems can provide real-time tracking, showing you exactly where your child is, and can even alert you if your child is speeding in a car, deviates from an expected route, or if your child needs your help. In addition, children might be engaging in inappropriate or even illegal activities, such as the recent "sexting" trend, which has ruined some children's lives by branding them as "sex offenders". Monitoring these conversations and intervening before these arise to the level of illegal may save your child's future. For these reasons, this type of monitoring is an excellent solution for many parents. However, there are several reasons where this monitoring can back fire.
Revolt - Children are smart, and after getting into trouble once, the child – who will probably engage in whatever activity they were initially engaging in – will figure out a way to "cover up" their actions. A child, who knows that you are monitoring their cell phone (at least from a GPS standpoint), may simply drop the phone off at a location they are supposed to be, prior to going to do something they are not supposed to be doing. The real problem with this is that a child who is "seeking trouble" will leave their cell phone. Therefore, the purpose of having a cell phone – to help your child out in an emergency – fails, and worse, when the child is getting into "trouble" and will most likely need the phone, they will not have it. Furthermore, reprimanding your child for driving too fast, in your modern, safe and reliable car, could result in your child going for rides in a friend's less-safe, unreliable car – thus removing all of the safety features you want for your kid, and ultimately putting them at a greater risk for injury than driving too fast. Furthermore, confronting a child may create severe trust issues between the parent and child and push the child to use other services, where a child cannot be tracked, such as using public computers, using Skype (or other online phone services). This confrontation could push the child to meet dangerous people in very dangerous locations, ultimately resulting with your child being at much greater risk than before. Worse, this scenario could result in a complete breakdown of conversation between the parent and the child.
Context – Monitoring a child's text messages, Internet usage and other activities are viewed from a parent's perspective, and in a vacuum – without insight into the activities, motivations or thought processes of the child. For example, you could easily confuse research done for a school project with a possibility that your child will engage in illegal activities. Eavesdropping in the middle of a conversation can also be detrimental (as eavesdropping rarely provides you with any fraction of reality), and can create a large amount of distrust if the child is confronted. For example, sarcasm is often very difficult to detect, and confronting a child about a sarcastic comment made – when the child believed it to be a private conversation – could result in real, problems between you and them.
Hackers – Everything connected to the Internet is subject to hacking. Recent reports from the government have revealed that foreign governments hacked into, and stole information from secure government databases. Additionally, Verizon, in 2009, released a report discussing how thieves stole over 285 million records from businesses. The threat of hacking into a monitoring system and allowing someone to track your child through what you think is a confidential tracking system is real. A hacker can gain access to anything connected to the Internet. Within the industry describing how prone applications and computers to hacking is discussed with similar terminology to the safe manufacturing industry. Safes are rated by how long it would take an experienced thief to crack it, usually in hourly increments, the same rating methodology used for many computer security systems. The likelihood that this will happen is remote (and there are no cases out there that the author has found), but this possibility exists.
Ways around this – Parents need to be careful what they monitor, and if they decide to monitor their children, what they will confront their child about and how they will do this. Parents, often times, forget what they did when they were younger – or even worse, remember and then overreact when their child heads down a similar path. Therefore, reacting to minor issues is one of the things parents should prevent. A good way to confront a child is to catch them in the act. Although this is not always feasible, and parents clearly should prevent many activities before they rise to the level of "action", parents who discretely monitor their children should do what they can to catch them "red handed" and not overreact to something they heard. If you are worried about your child and potential criminal activity, working with your local police (sometimes) through a "scared strait" program may be another option. Finally, remember that kids will be kids, growing up, we all did things we regret, but sometimes children need to learn lessons the hard way – as a parent, it is up to you to decide how "hard" of a lesson a child should learn though.
In conclusion, parents should weigh their concerns with monitoring their child's activities to the unique needs of their situation. Parents need to ask themselves, will they overreact to something they hear out of context, and what ramifications – or negative repercussions exist if their child finds out about the monitoring. Essentially, if you confront your child about something you think you heard or you think they did, what actions will they take to "get away with it" in the future, and how much trust will you lose with your child. There are valuable reasons, and strong benefits to these tracking methods (i.e. if your child gets lost, injured, hurt, etc.). However, if you do monitor your child, you must flesh out scenarios that may have negative and potentially very damaging (to your child / to your relationship) conflicts, and do your best to avoid these. Engaging in "heavy" monitoring (eavesdropping on calls or managing text messages) may also be helpful, but a parent should carefully plan the confrontation with the child. Bringing up the monitoring could only provoke the child to find another method where they will be able to engage in that activity, but without being detected – and this of course will result in a breach of trust between the parent and child, and could escalate the problems for the family. However, at the end, parents need to use their best judgment, with the facts they have at the time to make the best decision they can.
