After a successful interview, the Nursing Job agency further assists you to regularize other travel, residence and certification requirements.
In order to work as a qualified nurse in the USA, you must have a license to practise there as a nurse and a visa that permits you to work. Salaries and conditions in the USA vary from state to state and in general there are no national agreements. The cost of living in different states varies too and this should be considered carefully, especially regarding accommodation and transport. A car may be essential in certain areas as many hospitals tend to be on the outer fringes of cities. Health insurance is normally included in the employment package, but check carefully if this is the case and the type of cover offered. Your holiday entitlement in the USA can vary, and is usually quite limited, somewhere between two to four weeks a year.
If you are non-resident, for you to get employment as a nurse in the USA, you need two main requirements which include sitting for the CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) exam as well as the NCLEX-RN examination in your chosen state of the USA. The NCLEX-RN exam is the most important qualification to get for you to work in the USA without which you cannot practise as a nurse in the US. To take this examination, you must have travel to the US state where you wish to work to take the exam after which you leave the country to wait for your results. If you are successful, your prospective employer may then apply for a visa to enable you to return to the USA to work.Note that only a US employer can apply for an employment visa on your behalf.
An easy way to obtain these qualifications is by joining a Nursing Job recruitment agency which sponsors nurses to fly to the USA to sit for exams. There is only one category of first-level of nurses in the USA which is the Registered Nurse (RN) an equivalent of the RGN qualification in the UK and only a RGN is eligible to apply for nurse registration in the USA. Each state in the USA has its own board of nursing, as well as its own regulations for foreign-trained nurses which vary from one state to another. Most states require that beginners pass the CGFNS exam before they can apply for the NCLEX-RN examination.
The CGFNS Certification Program is meant only for first-level general nurses who qualified outside USA and wish to sit for the NCLEX-RN, and obtain license as registered nurses within the United States. The examination is held three times a year in London with all applications processed at CGFNS headquarters in the USA. The program consists of a Credentials Review, a one-day qualifying examination on nursing, and an English language proficiency exam. At the successful completion of the three stages, the applicant is issued a CGFNS Certificate.
You may be required to provide evidence of having studied both theory and clinical education in some aspects of health care including medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry before you can sit for the exam. It is advisable to check for the status of your application and further advice and information with the CGFNS headquarters or the board of nursing in the state where you intend to practice.
