Finish your Living Room's Look with a Chic Ottoman
Ottomans are those great finishing touches that can say two things about you:
They can imply you expect your gathering room to be filled to the brim with interesting guests who will require extra seating. And they can say something about your sense of style. Whether it's an Indian silk pouffe or an ottoman wrapped in giraffe patterned faux leather, this armless stool can add a touch of international mystery or old world class to an otherwise sensible or tame room.
The term "ottoman" was introduced into English in 1806 to mean a footstool.
In Europe, at the time, ottomans were typically reclining couches, in keeping with the fashionable Turkish style.Today the term stands for a footstool, hassock, pouffe or tuffet (as in Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet).Ottomans have been incorporated into most styles – modern, mission, formal, informal, leather and upholstery. They can be used in most rooms to provide extra seating, as a resting place and often times as storage units for magazines, knitting, remote controls, afghans – or anything you use often in this room.
Ottoman Functions
Wider ottomans can easily double as a bench and a storage facility. The Espresso Flip-top Bi-cast Leather Storage Bench seats two and offers lots of storage space. Made with a solid wooden frame, the ottoman has an extra padded leather seat. It comes in either red or espresso bi-cast leather. Measuring 17¾ inches high by 44½ inches wide and 21¼ inches deep, this bench will be extremely functional in any room.
While many ottomans with a firm surface can double as a coffee table, one ottoman actually looks like a coffee table. The Bicast Tufted Leather Ottoman has a beautiful ebony wood frame that encircles the round, cream-colored leather cushion. The four long legs that rise to support the cushion are what make this look like a coffeetable. But once you sit on the 1.8-density foam padded top, you will know it was also designed for seating. It measures 36 inches in diameter and 17 inches high.Other ottomans, like the plush Moss Green Velvet 40-inch Round Ottoman, look like something out of the Ottoman Dynasty. Although it is completely covered by plush velvet, it is made to withstand daily use. At 40 inches in diameter, this roomy ottoman is big enough to hold two or three people when you need extra seating. Otherwise, tuck it away in a corner.
For a cleaner, more modern look, consider the Reims Storage Ottoman. At just 19 inches high by 21 inches wide and 21 inches deep, it is smaller than most. It easily functions as an extra seat for one, a foot rest in front of a chair, or as extra storage space. Just pop the top of this tufted, gray linen-look piece and you will find room for a television guide, remote, etc.Similar in function is the Round Storage Tray Ottoman. It can serve as a seat for one, a footrest and a storage unit. But this small, red leather ottoman also has a removable tray on the reverse side of the tufted top. Take off the tufted top and flip it over to reveal the built-in tray. Pop the lid back on the ottoman with the tray side up and you have a great place to set your drinks or small plates.
Colors and Styles
If you are worried that you could never find an ottoman to match your color palette or your décor, relax.When you want to introduce a bright spot of color into your room, bring in a pair of Kristof Red Leather Ottomans. Just about square in shape, these ottomans resemble red dice with all five sides decked out in tufted red leather.
